A List of Diet Foods for SCD
SCD, or the specific carbohydrate diet, is a dietary program designed to help manage chronic digestive diseases including Crohn’s disease, ulcerative colitis, diverticulitis, celiac disease, chronic diarrhea and cystic fibrosis. However, the diet is safe and healthy for all individuals, according to the SCD website. When it comes to carbs, SCD allows only monosaccharides — or simple carbohydrates that consist of a single sugar molecule and are easily digested. Complex carbohydrates, which include disaccharides and polysaccharides, are not allowed.
SCD is based on the premise that humans evolved over millions of years to eat fish, meat, eggs, vegetables, nuts and low-sugar fruits. Since humans have consumed many of the food staples included in the modern diet, such as grains, legumes, starches, pastas and breads, for only the last 10,000 years, these foods are not easily digested and can thus cause a range of health problems including obesity, brain disorders and bowel disorders, notes the SCD website, which also adds that the specific carbohydrate diet has been clinically tested for over 50 years with credible results.
SCD-Approved Proteins and Cheeses
Meat, including anchovies, bacon, beef, fish, fowl, lamb, pork, poultry, shellfish, as well as eggs, and homemade yogurt are allowed. Cheeses including Asiago, blue, Brie, Gouda, havarti, Monterey Jack, Muenster, natural cheeses, provolone, Romano and Swiss are SCD approved.
SCD-Approved Fruits and Vegetables
Fruits including apples, avocado, berries, cantaloupe, cherries, coconut, dates, canned fruit, grapefruit, grapes, kiwi, kumquats, lemons, limes, mangoes, melon, nectarines, oranges, papayas, passion fruit, peaches, pears, plums, prunes, tangerines and watermelon are allowed on the SCD diet. Vegetables allowed on SCD include acorn squash, artichokes, asparagus, bok choy, Brussels sprouts, broccoli, butternut squash, cabbage, carrots, cauliflower, celery, collard greens, cucumbers, eggplant, jalapenos, kale, mushrooms, olives, onions, peas, peppers, dill pickles, pumpkins, rhubarb, rutabaga, spinach, squash, wasabi, watercress and zucchini.
SCD allows nuts and nut butters including almond butter, almonds, Brazil nuts, cashews, chestnuts, hazelnuts, macadamia nuts, peanuts, pecans, pine nuts, pistachios and walnuts.
SCD-Approved Oils and Vinegars
Oils, butters and vinegars including almond oil, avocado oil, butter, canola oil, coconut oil, corn oil, flaxseed oil, ghee, grape seed oil, olive oil, peanut oil, sunflower oil, red wine vinegar, white wine vinegar and walnut oil are SCD approved.
SCD-Approved Seasonings and Sweeteners
Herbs and seasonings including allspice, bay leaf, cilantro, cinnamon, garlic, ginger, mustard, nutmeg, oregano, paprika, parsley, rosemary, sage and salt are allowed. Sweeteners including aspartame, honey and saccharine are SCD approved.
SCD approved drinks include club soda, coffee, coconut milk, cranberry juice, green tea, fresh orange juice, peppermint tea, and other types of tea. Alcoholic beverages including bourbon, gin, vodka, wine, and whiskey are also allowed.
